Plan Different Routines on Alternating Weeks

Plan different Monday routines on alternating weeks. Set separate two-week repeats, anchor each to its first date and check a four-week example.

The same weekday can need different steps in alternate weeks. Monday might be a workday in Week A and a day off in Week B. A routine that repeats every Monday would put the same sequence on both. Two routines, each repeating every two weeks from a different Monday, can keep those plans separate.

We make Play This Life. This illustrative example uses two short saved routines. It follows a known two-week pattern supplied by the person planning; choose dates that match your own commitments.

Choose the cycle · Set the repeats · Check four Mondays

Choose the cycle before the days

Write down one complete Week A and Week B, then check when Week A begins again. If your Monday sequence is the same every week, a weekly repeat is enough. Our different-day routines guide explains choosing fixed weekday sets.

For an alternating pattern, two details matter: Every 2 weeks keeps a routine off the intervening week, and Starts on puts it in the intended half of the cycle. Calling something “Week B” helps you find it; the name does not choose its dates.

Give each Monday its own checklist

Use two separate saved routines, each with its own child steps. These durations are planning estimates.

Week A departure — seven minutes

  1. Check the first commitment: three minutes.
  2. Pack the needed materials: four minutes.

Week B start — ten minutes

  1. Check personal plans: three minutes.
  2. Prepare hobby materials: seven minutes.

Keep the repeat on each routine. These example steps have no independent repeat or time. Finishing Week A's departure does not stand in for doing Week B's checklist.

Save the two-week repeats

Begin with saved routines that do not already repeat. Open each routine's Task details, then Edit task if shown. If needed, set View to Routine and select Save view. In Repeats, set:

  • Repeat mode: Calendar.
  • Every: 2; Calendar period: Week.
  • Days: Monday only.
  • Requirement: Mark complete.
  • Missed windows: Skip missed windows.
  • Repeat timezone: Asia/Kolkata.
  • Leave Ends on (optional) empty.

Set Starts on to November 9, 2026 and Time (optional) to 07:30 for Week A departure. For Week B start, use November 16, 2026 and 09:30. This example has midnight Day start.

Select Save repeat, then reopen the saved details. Check the interval, Monday selection, start date, time and steps for each routine. Starting both on the same Monday would put both in the same alternating weeks.

Check four Mondays

Open these dates in Planner. Check which routine appears, not just whether its title says A or B.

Illustrative Mondays · November 2026 · Asia/Kolkata
MondayRoutineStart
November 9Week A departure07:30
November 16Week B start09:30
November 23Week A departure07:30
November 30Week B start09:30

Neither repeat ends on November 30. When you do a routine, select Start routine, check the steps you do, then select Finish routine. The saved checklist remains available for its later turns.

For one changed date, move one turn. If the ongoing pattern changes, review the future repeat and check when it takes effect.

Keep the rest of life alongside it

Your project steps, routines, habits, workouts and chores share the same week. The all-in-one planner keeps their saved records together, with Ginger to help organize the plan. Its seven-day trial requires a card, followed by a paid subscription; see prices and trial terms.

The separate free weekly planner can compare one week's estimated minutes with daily limits. Download a CSV before leaving and reopen it manually later. It does not apply these alternating-week rules or sync into the saved app.
